NYS Traffic Safety Committee

Basic Child Passenger Safety for Law Enforcement

Highway Safety Partner,

Did you know?

  • Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death and injury for children ages 1-13.
  • 3 out of 4 car seats are used improperly.
  • NYS law requires children under 2 years old must ride rear-facing.
  • Law Enforcement Agencies can provide community outreach by connecting caregivers with resources such as local child passenger safety technicians and even free car seats.

Most police officers go their entire career without having received any training on child passenger safety, yet they have some of the best opportunities to spot and correct car seat misuse. GTSC’s Basic Child Passenger Safety for Law Enforcement is a 4-hour training that provides officers with a basic understanding of car seat safety, including how to recognize common misuse errors, NYS VTL laws that apply to car seats (traffic stops), and how to connect caregivers with resources that can help children in their communities ride safer.

*Please note this is NOT a course to certify officers as CPSTs (nationally certified child passenger safety technicians)*
