Use of Force Updates – Erie and Albany Counties
In a continued effort to implement the Municipal Police Training Council Use of Physical Force and Deadly Physical Force section of the Basic Course for Police Officers, BCPO derivatives, and the Basic Course for Corrections Officers, DCJS is offering the 2-day Use of Force Refresher in the following locations:
- Erie County – January 30-31, 2025
- Albany County – February 10-11, 2025
This course is appropriate for anyone teaching use of force, supervisors, policymakers, and firearms or defensive tactics instructors. Topics include understanding and applying the constitutional requirements for police use of force, Penal Law Article 35’s interpretation and role in training, force investigations, human performance issues and their implications, supervisory responsibilities, and proper report writing.
Additionally, this training will serve to familiarize instructors with the Use of Force and Deadly Physical Force section of the Basic Course for Police Officers, Basic Course for Peace Officers, or the Basic Course for Corrections Officers and is currently required for all who instruct this section. While this Use of Force section was specifically developed for basic level training, it is suitable and encouraged to be presented in an in-service environment as well.
This course will be presented by Deputy Chief Mark Rusin of the Syracuse Police Department and Mike Puckett of the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services. Deputy Chief Rusin and Mr. Puckett played an integral role in the development of the training and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to this training course.
Seating is limited and you must receive confirmation to attend. Not everyone who registers will get to attend. The online application can be accessed by clicking here. Questions should be directed to Public Safety Program Specialist Mike Puckett at [email protected] or (518) 457-4917.
