The Village of Floral Park is inviting qualified law enforcement professionals to apply for the position of Commissioner of Police in the Floral Park Police Department.

The Incorporated Village of Floral Park is located in western Nassau County, Long Island, New York. Its 16,000 engaged residents, popular children's organizations and schools, thriving businesses, civic groups, houses of worship, nonprofit organizations, and others benefit from the Village's full-service offerings to all and a wonderful quality of life.

One of the Village's greatest assets, since 1918, is the Floral Park Police Department, whose Mission is: To work in partnership with the people of the Village of Floral Park in preventing crime, and preserving the peace and order of the Village; while serving and protecting all persons, safeguarding their property and enhancing their quality of life, through professional, superior and compassionate policing.

The Floral Park Police Department is commanded by a Commissioner of Police, who is appointed by the Mayor and Board of Trustees. The Police Commissioner is the Chief Executive Officer of the Department and final Departmental authority in all matters of policy, operations and discipline. He/She exercises all lawful powers of his/her office and issues such lawful orders as necessary to assure the effective operation and performance of the Department.

There are thirty-four Uniformed Officers in the Department including the Patrol Officers, Sergeants and Lieutenants, as well as Detectives. The Department also includes nineteen civilian employees in the positions of Dispatchers, Crossing Guards, and Neighborhood Aides.

As per the Code of the Village of Floral Park, Chapter 25, Commissioner of Police:

The Commissioner of Police shall be appointed by the Mayor of the Village, which appointment shall be approved by the Board of Trustees and shall serve at the pleasure of the Board, all in a manner consistent with the provisions of the Village Law. The Commissioner of Police shall have at least the following qualifications and experience:

  1. A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience (promotions in chain of command) in municipal law enforcement, which must include at least five years in a command-level position;

  2. A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution; however, a Master's Degree from an accredited institution in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Public Safety Management, or related field shall be preferred; and

  3. Such other and further qualifications and experience as the Mayor and Board of Trustees may specify via resolution.

  4. Nassau County residency required at time of appointment and for duration of appointment.
