Child Abuse Investigations Course - Fultonville

The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety is pleased to announce a new 2-day course offering: Comprehensive Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Investigations Course.

This course has been redesigned to equip police officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively handle sexual assault and child abuse cases, which are often among the most challenging and dynamic they will encounter. Through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, role-playing exercises, and case study analysis participants will be better prepared to manage the complexities of sexual assault and child abuse cases with sensitivity, competence, and professionalism.

Additionally, this course will also satisfy the requirement codified in NYS Executive Law ยง838-a Section 3(a) which requires each police agency, prosecutorial agency and other law enforcement agency within New York State to designate at least one person, who is trained in trauma and victim response that meets the minimum trainings standards.

Instructional topics include:

  • Understand the complexities and dynamics of sexual assault and child abuse cases.
  • Learn how trauma can affect the disclosure process from survivors and how to handle these situations.
  • Develop skills in interviewing victims sensitively and effectively.
  • Explore the psychological impact on victims and how to provide immediate and appropriate support.
  • Learn strategies for interagency collaboration and coordination with community partners, including social services, medical professionals, and advocacy groups.
  • Understand the importance of building a complete case, from initial report to prosecution, and how to do this.
  • Review and analyze case studies and scenarios to identify best practices and common pitfalls in handling these types of cases.

This course will be taught by retired Senior Investigator Matthew Stegner. Mr. Stegner has 26 years' experience with the New York State Police in handling complex criminal investigations, specialization in areas like sexual assault, child exploitation, internet crimes against children, and interpersonal violence investigations which showcases his commitment to addressing some of the most sensitive and crucial aspects of law enforcement. Moreover, his passion for speaking and training in these domains underscores a desire to share knowledge and improve the collective response to these crimes.

Pre-registration is required. The location of training and class times will be provided through an email confirmation; those who do not register will not receive this important notification and will not be admitted to the training. Walk-ins and transferring of confirmation notices will not be permitted.
