IPTM Investigation of Motorcycle Crashes

The NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to announce the availability of the following University of North Florida Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) training courses:

IPTM Pedestrian/Bicycle Crash Investigation

 The course is a five-day training class scheduled for:

  Saratoga County – January 24 - 28, 2022

 Westchester County – June 27 – July 1, 2022

Pedestrian and bicycle crashes are one of the most frequent types of injurious crashes in urban areas. Because of their unique nature, special techniques are required to investigate and reconstruct these incidents. This course addresses the special dynamics involved in pedestrian and bicycle traffic crashes. From reaction times to victim injury analysis to environmental factors, you’ll learn to recognize and interpret the evidence and correlate it with the collision sequence.

Topics Include:

  • Pedestrian crash problems
  • Pedestrian impact dynamics
  • Types of data: objective, subjective, and performance
  • Collection of data
  • Pedestrian conspicuity
  • Reaction time/human factors
  • Reconstruction techniques
  • Bicycle collision analysis
  • Hit and run investigation techniques 

Prerequisite: 

 Successful completion of IPTM At Scene Traffic Crash/Traffic Homicide Investigation Course

OR

NYS DCJS Motor Vehicle Crash Management Intermediate Course 
IPTM Investigation of Motorcycle Crashes

 The course is a five-day training class scheduled for: 

 Monroe County – February 7-11, 2022

Westchester County – February 21-25, 2022

The class is designed to prepare law enforcement officers in the concepts and principles of investigating a motorcycle crash. The training includes classroom presentations and projects. Mandatory prerequisites for attending the training are listed below:

Topics include:

  • Analyzing and interpreting the motorcycle crash scene
  • Determining acceleration and deceleration characteristics of the motorcycle
  • Analyzing and interpreting modes of instability and handling characteristics in motorcycles
  • Interpreting the operator factor
  • Reviewing motorcycle tires, helmets, and other equipment
  • Using a practical application of formulas (projects)

Prerequisite:

 Successful completion of IPTM At Scene Traffic Crash/Traffic Homicide Investigation Course 

OR

NYS DCJS Motor Vehicle Crash Management Intermediate Course 

 Cost:

 There is no registration fee. Travel costs including meals, hotels, and transportation will not be provided. 

Pre-Registration is required. All interested parties must register at least two weeks before the course as seats are limited. The location of training, class times, and safety guidelines will be provided through an email confirmation; those who do not register will not receive this important notification and will not be admitted to the training. Walk-ins and transferring of confirmation notices will not be permitted. Additionally, contact information provided (email and phone number) on the registration form will be used in the event contact tracing is required. Be sure to provide the best contact information as circumstances may require contact outside normal business days or hours. Providing this information serves as consent for Division use for contract tracing purposes only.

Important Safety Measures

The safety and wellbeing of the training participants, instructors, venue staff, and DCJS staff are of the utmost importance during the current pandemic, therefore DCJS will be implementing a number of safety protocols for all DCJS hosted events. In addition to following general Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and NYS Department of Health guidelines on proper health hygiene, all attendees, instructors, and DCJS staff will be required to: complete a daily electronic health screening before the scheduled start time of the training; wear a mask or face covering at all times when in a classroom, venue or within six feet of another person outside of the venue; practice social distancing; utilize the same seating space for the duration of the training, and follow all safety protocols established by the hosting venue. 

Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in removal from the training and premises and the attendee’s agency will be notified. The Division reserves the right to follow up with any attendee or agency in the event of a failure to notify DCJS staff of trainee absence, likewise, attendees must notify DCJS staff of any absence after the commencement of training. Trainees must also notify DCJS staff of exposure to COVID-19 or a positive COVID-19 test result within 14 days after the culmination of training.

The Division will consult with the hosting venue to ensure proper cleaning/disinfecting of the classroom before each training day. Cleaning supplies will be made available during the entire training day to be used on an as-needed basis.

Seating is limited. Therefore, you must receive a confirmation of attendance. Please complete the course application and have it sent no later than three weeks before the start of the course.
