Electronic Measuring Device / Forensic Mapping Course - Oneida Co.

The Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety is pleased to announce two Electronic Measuring Device (i.e. Total Station) courses. The course will be presented using Nikon Total Stations. The four-day course is designed to prepare crash investigators and crime scene technicians in operating a Total Station instrument and producing a two-dimensional scale diagram suitable for court presentation. Each student will be able to successfully measure and generate a diagram accurately representing a crime scene and a motor vehicle crash scene.

Date and Location:
Oneida County - August 21-24, 2023

Each student will be responsible for bringing an operable Total Station or equivalent instrument, operation manuals, accessory packs (batteries, cables, etc.), laptop computers and Visual Statement Reveal or compatible software. Students from the same department may work as a group on one instrument, but no more than four people per instrument. To work with the demands of the CAD drawing programs the PC or laptop being used must have:

Computer requirements:

  • Operating system Windows 7 or newer.
  • Intel I-3 or better processor or AMD equivalent.
  • 4 gig of physical RAM
  • 1 gig of video ram
  • Mouse (not just the touch pad)

Prerequisites must be one of the following:

  • Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) At Scene Traffic Crash Investigation
  • DCJS Intermediate Crash Management Course
  • DCJS Police Crime Scene and Evidence Specialist Course
  • An equivalent course may be accepted at the discretion of DCJS

Pre-Registration is required. All interested parties must register at least two weeks prior to the course as seats are limited. The location of training, class times and safety guidelines will be provided through an email confirmation; those who do not register will not receive this important notification and will not be admitted to the training. Walk-ins and transferring of confirmation notices will not be permitted. Additionally, contact information provided (email and phone number) on the registration form will be used in the event contact tracing is required. Be sure to provide the best contact information as circumstances may require contact outside normal business days or hours. Providing this information serves as consent for Division use for contract tracing purposes only.

There is no fee to attend the course. Seats are limited due to the technical nature of the course. Therefore, you must receive confirmation on attendance.
